Wildfires in Sicily have complex and diverse reasons. But, no matter what they are in detail, the solutions are the same – and they are simple.
With our Anti-Wildfire Summer Camp, we gathered our local community in the mountains of Palermo. Our friends from Movimento Antincendio Ibleo came over and provided activists training: how to recognise different types of fire, how to communicate them correctly to the authorities, and how to approach them safely as a civic fire fighter. Further, we hosted a small laboratory for auto-construction of fire extinguisher hand tools and did some exercises.
Immediate fire response is a short-term solution. In order to create landscapes which are less vulnerable to wildfires we also hosted a workshop on Food Forests. This plan will be implemented as a food system integrative with grazing animals like goats.
This project was made possible with the support of Planet Wild. The organisation provided us with equipment such as fire fighting backpacks and fire proof shoe-wear. Further, we'll host a certified training AIB in autumn 2023.
